Old Spice Persuasive Commercial

I discovered this awkward, yet comical body wash advert titled "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like".  This short ad was made by Old Spice. This company is known for making some very, very, weird ads. This particular one is no exception. The ad uses multiple persuasive techniques such as obvious stereotypes to make the customer feel that this deodorant will be the best thing they ever buy.

The slogan "Smell Like a Man" is a very stereotypical statement which brain washes men into thinking that they must have this body wash to smell how a man should smell. Do you really need this body wash to smell like a man? Is this the only manly scent in the world?  The ad describes the body wash you or 'your man' currently uses as "lady scented body wash". This is obviously not true, but it makes you feel that you need switch to Old Spice to fit inside 'the box' of what a true man smells like.

The men watching who envy the character notice that cannot be him, so the next best thing would be to smell like him. Men will be persuaded to believe that their women will expect them to smell like this. Also, men will be fooled into thinking that this body wash will instantly attract more women to them. This illusion comes about as the character in the advert seems as if he is a true ladies man due to the body wash he uses.

Finally, the setting and props used in the advert make the body wash seem like a very expensive and high class product used by the affluent and rich. Diamonds, yachts and horses persuade men to think that purchasing this product will make "anything possible" and somehow improve their economic status.

All in all, this is a very humorous and comical ad. It does good job persuading viewers to buy the product through many techniques. I think it was an effective advertisement.

  1. I like how the man was talking rhymes because it is fun. I also like how the senses were changing every second but it was confusing.
